Akshaya Tritiya, also called Akha Teej, Parasurama Jayanti, or Akti in different parts of the country, is celebrated on the third Tithi(lunar day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaisakh according to the Hindu calendar.
Celebrated widely by Hindus and Jains in India and Nepal, it is a day of good luck, success, and fortune gains. This year Akshaya Tritiya, “third day of unending prosperity”, is celebrated today on the 14th of May 2021.
History and significance
As per Hindu mythology, Akshaya Tritiya marks the beginning of the Treta Yuga. And according to Hindu mythology, multiple beliefs are surrounding Akshaya Tritiya.
One belief is that it is the birth anniversary of Lord Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu who according to Hindu beliefs is the preserver of the Universe. It is also believed that on this day, Ved Vyasa and Lord Ganesha started writing Mahabharata, which is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India. Another belief is that on this day Sudama visited his childhood friend Krishna in Dwarka seeking help, and received unlimited wealth.
According to the Mahabharata, Akshaya Tritiya is the day on which Lord Krishna presented Akshaya Patra, a magic bowl that would continue to produce an unlimited amount of food to the Pandavas so that they would be never left hungry, while in their exile.
Another significant event related to the day of Akshaya Tritiya is that it was this day the Ganga river descended on the earth at the behest of King Bhagiratha to help his ancestors attain Moksha.
Akshaya Tritiya and Rath Yatra
While the whole of India celebrates Akshaya Tritiya in different ways, people Odisha celebrates it as a holy day in Puridham, as it marks the beginning of lord Jagannath’s rath yatra, a world-famous festival that takes place in Odisha’s pilgrimage city.
It has been mentioned in Skanda Purana, Brahma Puran, and Matsya Purana that the holy festival of Rath Yatra, begins on the day of Akshaya Tritiya, and on this day the construction of the chariots for the festival is begun. The Shree Jagannath temple located in Puri is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, an avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu. And during Rath Yatra or the Chariot festival, Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are taken in chariots to stay in the Gundicha Temple.
On a final note, Akshaya Tritiya is considered an auspicious day for new ventures, marriages, and house warmings. It is also best to buy gold on this day since it is believed to bring good luck. It pulls millions of Indians to jewelry stores across the country every year.
Surprisingly, Eid Al Fitr, the holy festival of breaking the fast in the Muslim community, and Aksha ya Tritiya is occurring on the same day this year, and it intensifies the importance and divinity of this sacred day.
